Dear colleagues,
Please find a PhD offer at the Laboratory of Waves and Complex Media
at Le Havre University, on the quantum study of reactive collisions, of
interest for the cold plamsas, for the combustion and for astrophysics.
We would be highly indebted to you to strongly advertise this offer,
and to encourage the candidates who may be intersted to contact us as
soon as possible.
Thank you in advance !
Sincerely yours,
Ioan SCHNEIDER and François LIQUE

Proposal of a PhD subject at University of Le Havre, LOMC-FRE-3102
Title of the research project: Electronic and molecular collisions of
carbon- and hydrogen-containing species in cold plasmas and combustion.
Description of the project: For many years, the Laboratory of Waves and
Complex Media (LOMC) performs theoretical researches - using the
multichannel quantum defect method, the coupled equations, the quantum
chemistry - on the electron/molecular cation[1,2] and
atom/molecule[3-6] reactive collisions.
The cross sections for this kind of elementary processes are of major
interest for the modeling of the kinetics of cold plasmas - in the
atmospheric entry of spacecrafts, at the walls of the thermonuclear
fusion machines - of the combustion flames and of the media of
astrophysical interest[7-9].
In the frame of this PhD work, we aim to compute cross sections and
rate coefficients for the following processes :
AB^{+} + e^{-} -> A* + B, AB^{+} + e^{-}, A + B^{+} + e^{-} (1)
H + AB -> H + AB* (2)
where AB are CH, CO, H2, D2, and to initiate the study of the same
processes for poly-atomic molecules (HCO, H_{3}O).
The computed rate coefficients will be compared with those measured in
the heavy ion storage rings, and will be subsequently used in
collisional-radiative models elaborated for the understanding and the
control of the invoked reactive environments.

Experience and skills requested: The candidate should have a solid
background in fundamental physics. He should have a good insight into
atomic and molecular processes, and in programming. Having a master
degree in atomic and molecular physics or in reactive environments is
also appreciated. A good practice of English is necessary, since he
will be involved in many international collaborations.
