Dear all,
Below are two terms that are currently under discussion. Designed Landscape has been formulated to provide a ‘catch all’ evidence term for features such as cemeteries but may also be used in similar sites such as: parks/gardens. Interment was formulated as there is no current term for a deliberate burial.
So if I created a record for a Cemetery, I can index the record as a Cemetery with the evidence term as ‘Designed Landscape’. This provides an overarching term that can be used singularly or in combination with other monument types.
Therefore, If the cemetery contains other features such as Gravestone, Matzevah, etc then the record could also be indexed with Gravestone with the evidence as ‘structure’ or chapel with the evidence term as ‘extant building’ etc. Of course the level that you record such monuments will vary with your current recording guidelines or as in cases when the information is not known (esp. when desk based).
Designed Landscape
A landscape which has been specifically designed or modified. Often indicated by proven below ground stratigraphy, revealed by deliberate investigation including geophysical survey, or other surface monuments or structures.
Interment
A burial usually located in a special area set aside for the purpose of burial, such as a graveyard or cemetery.
Your comments/suggestions would be appreciated.
Neil
