Dear all,
the promised free download of the 1:500'000 geological maps of
Switzerland is admittedly not very intuitive yet. Here comes a brief
instruction for those who have tried to download the maps in vain.
Apologies to all those who are not interested.
Go to
http://www.toposhop.admin.ch/en/shop/products/maps/geology/gk500/pixel_1
There is a choice of seven products. The first six are pixel maps as
.tif- files. The last product is the combined Geological Map, Tectonic
Map, and Hydrogeological Map of Switzerland 1:500'000 as attributed
vector dataset ("digital GIS version") and comes as .mxd, .shp, and
.lyr- files in a zipped folder.
In the small boxes indicate 1 (i.e. the number of products you wish to
download)
Scroll down the page and "Add to the shopping basket"
You will then have to open an account ("I'm not yet a registered
user"), "Continue to order"
Follow the individual steps until your order is being confirmed and a
link sent to your email adress. From there you can download a zipped
folder.
Extract the folder.
The folder contains the zipped "GK500_V1_1_DE (German) and ..._FR
(French) (no English version yet) with the .mxd and other GIS-files.
Unzip one of the two to access the vector files.
Open the .mxd-file to view the geological, tectonic and
hydrogeological maps. The .mxd- file contains all of the shape and
layer files from the folders "shapes" and "Symbole"; you don't need to
manually add any. The folder e.zip contains special symbols ("fonts";
in English) that you should install in your system to properly display
all symbols.
That's it - I hope everyone who's interested manages to download the
data like this. We have asked the webmaster to simplyfy the download
procedure already. Any additional comments, however, are certainly
appreciated!
Best regards,
Julia
