The Royal Opera House is the major lyric arts theatre in the United Kingdom, enjoying an international reputation for excellence. The Royal Opera House Collections contain materials covering the history of the three theatres that have stood on the site since 1732. The department is involved in a full range of activities to ensure the preservation of the Collections and to make them accessible to a wide audience.
We are currently seeking an experienced Cataloguing Manager to develop and co-ordinate the cataloguing and digitisation programme for the Collections and oversee web access to our catalogue and performance database. The responsibilities of the role include:
o Planning the cataloguing strategy for the collection and performance databases, in collaboration with Head of Collections and Collections Senior Management Team.
o Coordinating the digitisation of material in the Collection, taking into consideration conservation and copyright issues.
o Managing the work of the Collections and Performance Cataloguers, ensuring the quality and accuracy of their work, and ensuring targets and deadlines are met.
o Developing and maintaining in-house cataloguing standards and working procedures and documenting, disseminating and providing training on these as appropriate.
o Managing Adlib databases to ‘superuser’ level and leading on the relationship with software providers, website consultants and ROH technology staff.
o Participating in cross-departmental projects, including annual conservation projects at off site stores.
The successful applicant will be a graduate or equivalent with a relevant post-graduate qualification or experience in Archives or Museum Management and have:
o Experience of working in a specialist collection, of handling materials in a variety of media and of conservation issues.
o Knowledge of museum and/or archive cataloguing standards, including ISAD(G).
o Experience of managing Adlib cataloguing databases, with excellent Microsoft Office and website software skills.
o Experience of supervising and motivating staff to achieve their best performance.
o The ability to prioritise and manage work to deadlines.
o Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Some knowledge of Opera and Ballet and the history and work of the Royal Opera House is desirable but not essential.
