Although design research that involves participants is rarely (one would hope) as invasive or risky as phycological or medical research, some institutes would seem to take a very broad brush approach to the matter. Leaving design researchers having to fill out lengthly and sometimes surreal ethics applications, when they (I) would rather be writing abstracts to applying to conferences with the potential outcomes of said research. Even so the are other options, such as the 'relaxed' application as metioned by Michael to expedite the process or 'low risk' categories that also allow the application to go forward quickly. Which most design research (one would think) would fit into. Having said that, it does force consideration of aspects of your research that you might not otherwise have cause to consider. Or encourage you to resolve things sooner rather than later.
Until design research gets its own 'low risk' expidited ethics categorisation... we may have to content ourselves with that.
