Irene,
This is ACAS's advice
The Employment Equality (Age) Regulations state a national default retirement age of 65. Compulsory retirement below 65 is unlawful unless objectively justified, and employees have the right to request to work beyond 65 or any other retirement age set by the company. The employer has a duty to consider such requests.

Subject: Age of retirement
Dear All
I would be really grateful if you would look at your HR policy for age of retirement. One of our colleagues in the hospital has been told she cannot continue to work because she is over 65. In the draft policy it states that you can stay on after 65 if you are in a “difficult to recruit or highly skilled post”. Does you policy support this. I this is ageism!!
Thank you
Irene
