The one that people are talking about at the moment is Koha- which is an
open source system. I've been to a few an open days on the subject and
everyone I speaks to seems very happy with it- although they have been keen
to emphasise that although the software is free, that the level of technical
expertise to install it yourself is fairly high. There are some
consultancies who are able to install and host it though for a reasonable
price (PTFS, Bibliotech etc), and it's definitely a system I'm thinking
about myself. I also imagine it'd be a good one for a school as it has a
lot of web 2.0 functionality- rating and recommending and so on.
There is now also a jiscmail group for the system:

Hope this helps

Subject: Freeware LMS for schools?
Hi All,
I've been asked by a friend to recommend a Library Management System for a
school library. The library is small (only about 2000 books). I mentioned
Heritage as a good system for small libraries.
Does anybody know of any freeware/shareware that may be up to the job? Or
recommend any other (cheap) systems?
thanks,
Christian
