Archivist, archaeologist, architect, alchemist (my favourite), what's
the difference? Do you wear those gloves...

Hi,
The wildest misunderstanding I have encountered regarding what an
archivist does came from a gentleman who assumed that because I was an
archivist I could read hieroglyphics.

Dear Kate,
Not quite "what is an archivist", but closely related:
A colleague and I were attending the 2002 SoA conference in Jersey, and
our taxi to the hotel was driven by a man who had moved to Jersey from
South London (it seemed important to him to emphasise the South), who
looked like an extra from Eastenders - heavy-set, gold jewellery, deeply
tanned. He asked us what we were in Jersey for, and we replied, "A
conference."
"What's it about? Money?" he asked.
"It's the Society of Archivists' conference."
"What's that about, then?"
"Well...archives?"
"What's that, then? Money?"

Dear colleagues
I am talking to the Catholic Archives Society annual conference next
month and have come up with this title. Obviously I have my own stories
but if anyone has a particularly unusual or funny experience when trying
to explain what they do I would be pleased to immortalise you! Needless
to say, you can remain anonymous if you prefer.
Thanks
Kate
