The Oxford Radcliffe Hospitals is one of the
largest NHS teaching trusts in the country. It
provides a wide range of general and specialist
clinical services and is a base for medical
education, training and research. The Trust
comprises three hospitals - the John Radcliffe
and Churchill Hospitals in Headington and the Horton Hospital in Banbury.
The Centre for Statistics in Medicine in Oxford
(Director: Professor Doug Altman) carries out
collaborative medical research projects, a
methodological research programme, and teaching.
Members of the Centre have a particular interest
in randomised controlled trials, systematic
reviews, prognostic and diagnostic studies.
The Centre currently employs 17 statisticians and
other researchers, 1 senior administrator and 2
admin support staff, and is part of the
Department of Clinical Pharmacology. The Centre
is located at an attractive site at Wolfson
College. For further information about the
Centre, visit http://www.csm-oxford.org.uk/ .
Applications are invited for a senior medical
statistician to lead the NHS statistical support
team, currently comprising 4 statisticians. The
successful applicant would be expected to lead
and develop the portfolio of statistical
collaboration and consultancy with clinical
researchers across several medical areas. In
addition, they may participate in applied
statistics research and contribute to the
Centre's teaching programme. The post holder will
be a member of the CSM Managerial Group.
Applicants should ideally have a good (first or
upper second) first degree (preferably with a

collaborative clinical research and expertise in
key aspects of study design and analysis,
particularly applied to randomised clinical
trials; they should be aware of the latest
statistical techniques. Experience in the use of
statistical packages is essential together with
good verbal and written communication skills,
including the ability to explain complex
statistical issues to non-statisticians.
