Did anyone see "The One Show" just now (Tuesday, 7pm)?
They were discussing the 'medical MOT', and one critic said that if an MOT
every 5 years for 30 years gives a 1 in 400 added risk of dying from
cancer. I don't know if this is right, but a few minutes later Adrian Chiles
had a word from the producer to say that the figure was wrong - and it
should be 1 in 4000.
However, the critic held her ground and said it was definitely 1 in 400.
I don't know which figure is correct. But the point that worries me is that
somebody in the TV company has obviously got the MOT company's interest at
heart in trying to feed new information in right at the end of the
interview. This seems potentially scandalous and I wonder how widespread it
is?

PS: Just checked their website
http://www.lifescanuk.org/benefits/benefitsandrisks/
This states even lower risks - 1 per million per mSv, and each MOT gives 10
mSv. So 6 MOTs looks like a risk of 60 per million or 1 per 16,000 -
assuming lots of things no doubt. (However, I was pleased and surpised to
see that the added risk was at least discussed on their website.)
