Freelance Content Writer – Jeans for Genes
Jeans for Genes is the national children’s charity that raises money to support
children and families affected by genetic disorders and to fund research into
the causes, treatments and cures for these disorders. Genes Are Us
(www.genesareus.org), the charity’s education programme, was launched in
2009 to encourage primary and secondary school children to engage with the
subject of genetics.
We are currently developing materials for a launch on 1st June and need
someone urgently to help develop content for paper-based worksheets and
activities aimed at core areas of the key stage 1-4 science curriculum.
We will require you to demonstrate that you can write clearly and concisely
and can explain complex science in a simple, entertaining and age appropriate
way to children.
Duties include:
- Researching and developing content for worksheets.
- Writing copy for worksheets.
Person specification:
Essential:
- Experience of communicating complex scientific information to a non-
specialist audience.
- Knowledge of genetics and related ethical, legal and social issues.
- BSc in natural sciences, preferably biology, genetics or related field.
- Excellent organisational skills, including ability to prioritise own workload to
meet tight deadlines in a challenging project environment.
- Ability to communicate clearly in verbal and written form.
- Good attention to detail
- Good IT skills, including Word, Excel, Publisher, PowerPoint, internet, email.
Desirable:
- MSc in science communication or science teaching experience.
- Experience of developing educational resources aimed at school children.
Contract type:
Freelance-based 6 week contract, commencing as soon as possible. Ideally full
time, with flexible working hours. Could be opportunity for longer term contract
for the right person.
Salary:
Will be based on a rate of £120 per day.
