Many thanks to those who replied! The link in the first comment has another
30-odd responses from an earlier survey.
There seems to be a slight majority who tag the discs themselves, with
security cases and keeping the discs at an issue desk also common.
-http://www.mickfortune.com/Wordpress/?p=220 It's the results from this
year's RFID survey specifically on CD/DVD management.
-we have a security case for the DVDs and we display them on shelves
-Ours are on open shelves with 3M tattle tapes. Works fine - though would
prefer RFID if we could get it!
-We no longer have a staffed counter so DVDs have to be self-issued. We use
Peg-It security cases from Piper Media. The student self-issues and then
takes to the security booth with the issue receipt to have the peg removed.
The peg is fitted with a non-programmable tattle( i.e. does not
desensitize).... When DVDs are returned the contents are checked to make
sure that the correct number of DVDs is inside before being repegged.
-These are kept on the open shelves (in amongst the books) for browsing. We
used to keep them in Pro-loc cases but stopped using these about 2 years ago
as we had a big push toward self service and keeping them in prolock cases
just wasn't compatible with that. Apart from a normal 3M tattle tape style
trigger we don't have any other security.
-We have a collection of some 4,000 DVDs across two campuses which are on
open access, with 3M DCD2 tags applied.... Regarding problems, in the main,
the worst people do is to return the box without the DVD (which I have done
myself!) in which case they are chased for it and often they have just left
it in their machine.
-We have DVDs on open shelves and protect the discs by using lockable cases.
The unlocker for the cases is kept outside of our RFID security gates, so
they have to be issued on to a user's account before they are unlocked.
-The situation [here] is that our DVDs are on open shelves in Short Loan. We
don't have any security cases on them but they are all RFID-tagged and the
cases are also EM-tagged. ... The problem with our method is actually too
much security - we've run into the problem that if you have a multi-DVD set
and the RFID tags are very close together our self-issue machines will 'fail
safe' and refuse to issue the DVD as they can't get a clear read of the tag.
This isn't great when we're trying to increase self-service and facilities
out of hours.
