What happens in this situation if you're an old fashioned Athens
subscriber who isn't part of the UK federation? It was my understanding
(which could be wrong) that the UK federation was only available to
'academic' organizations, and Learned Societies such as ourselves
couldn't join. It's not an immediate problem for us as we don't
subscribe to ACS publications, but it would be useful to know.

Hi all,
If a Service provider has made content available through the UK
federation, then Open Athens institutions who are members of the UK
Federation will be able to access the content.
I think the problem here is that the term Shibboleth has become
synonymous with the Federation, when actually Service Providers mean
providing access via the federation (meaning shibboleth and Open Athens
users).
If anyone has any questions please feel free to reply off list.

Subject: [LIS-E-RESOURCES] American Chemical Society New Platform
Doesn't Support ATHENS
Hi,
Following on from the discussion about problems with ATHENS access to
Creative Club I thought I'd raise a related issue of another publisher,
ACS, which only provides Shibboleth and IP access on its new platform.
I did raise the issue of when access to ATHENS was going to be available
on the new ACS platform through NESLi2 at the end of 2009 and was told
that they had bypassed ATHENS and gone straight to Shibboleth
compliancy. I did question this as we are not currently using Shibboleth
(and I know we aren't the only institution in this position) and was
told that ACS wouldn't be implementing ATHENS as they saw this as
becoming obsolete.
I have to say I wasn't happy with this response as other new platforms
e.g. Informa Healthcare have recently become compliant with ATHENS (and
presumably Shibboleth).
If IHC can provide access through ATHENS, why can't the ACS? Surely the
ACS should be trying to meet the needs of all its customers, not just
those who have already moved to Shibboleth.
I just wondered whether others are in the same position.
Cheers
Lesley
