It was the fact that it would be scrutinised. It's not just that others would see it. I made it clear that they would be amending one another's work. I think they don't like the idea of other students correcting them. With the right group, it can add a useful competitive edge, but it's one to handle with care!

Hi P.Emecz
Thank you for your feedback, did you set out to improve the quality of
the students writing as one of the objectives of using a wiki in the
first place or was it due to to the fact the students were aware that
their peers would see their contributions and so upped their game?
Kind Regards

We use Studywiz, and it has no wiki. We have kept Sharepoint on our
system just so that I can continue to use a wiki. I use it with A level
and GCSE students (and KS3). My feeling is that the quality of their
writing improves, because they are aware it will come under scrutiny.
It is equivalent to telling them I will photocopy an essay for peer
marking. The wiki then makes a useful revision tool.
In terms of independent learning, I allow students at KS3 more freedom
in terms of content. The reason is because we are so tied to the
curriculum in KS4 and 5. So in terms of independence, wikis are great,
as they allow students to make choices for themselves and respond to
choices others have made. However, I do less of this with exam groups.
Very anechdotal, I'm afraid. Hope it helps.

Subject: [VLES] Impact of Wikis and Blogs on Learning
Hi ALL
I am undertaking some research into the effectiveness of wiki and blogs,
I
know this post focuses on VLE's, however, most VLE's now incorporate
wiki
and blog modules.
Has anyone investigated the impact of using wiki's and blogs from a
learning
perspective when used to support student independent learning
activities?
I have asked Colleagues within my organisation and the response to the
question usually focuses on changes to student behaviour, for example,
increased participation, student engagement, rather then the learning
that
has taken place.
I would really appreciate your views and experiences in relation to
using wikis
and blogs and the impact they have on your students from a learning
perspective.
Kind Regards
