The New York Times piece was something to do with media reports of research
published in the New England Journal of Medicine, which then saw a boost in
citations... or so I believe.

Subject: [PSCI-COM] Research on the effect of publicity in lay media
I'm looking for references on the effect of the reporting of scientific
research in the lay media. I remember something in the 90s (I think in the
New York Times, but can't be sure) that showed that if scientific research
was reported in such media, the citation rate for the author increased quite
dramatically.
I'm also posting on ABSW so apologies to those of you who get this twice.
Many thanks in advance for your help
Mary
