EPSRC is the main UK government agency for funding research and training in engineering and the physical sciences, investing more than £850 million a year. Right now, we are looking for a talented media relations professional or experienced journalists to join our communication team and help bring our scientific achievements to life.
As Media Relations Manager, our corporate reputation will be in your hands. Not only will you be responsible for raising EPSRC research activities and key policies and strategies of the news agenda, but also for ensuring that adverse media coverage is dealt with factually and efficiently. What’s more, your ideas and decisions will play a big role in shaping future communications strategy.
As part of our wider communications strategy, we will look to take media relations to new levels – spotting new opportunities for media activities along the way. Your role will involve everything from being the primary point of contact for handling media enquiries, to writing releases and placing stories with journalists, organising press briefings and interviews, and conducting ongoing media evaluation. You will also be expected to act as media spokesperson for the organisation, as required.
Your success will be built on developing strong relationships with the media and press officers within other Councils and related organisations. Substantial experience in media relations is essential, either as a press officer or journalist. With a solid media background behind you, you will know all about managing the media in sensitive situations, communicating with multiple stakeholders, and applying good judgement to resolve fast moving reputational issues across a range of different media platforms. As a naturally gifted writer, you will be able to turn, often complex, scientific projects into engaging, newsworthy press releases and feature stories that will capture the minds of both the media and target audiences. Knowledge of the UK research community and an awareness of current science in society issues would obviously be a distinct advantage. Good organisational, project and people management skills are a must, as is a degree level qualification, or equivalent.
