Happiness
Quite unexpectedly,
happiness sets in
without rhyme or reason,
no knowing for how long.
Maybe the season -
summer's fading,
autumn's reliable
mildness setting in.
Winter in this latitude
temperate, good-tempered,
nothing to fear, at most
a few brief frosts.
Others are spreading
some viral cough, apologizing,
as they punctuate
my smiling humming.
My voice won't carry far,
that's OK. Listening
matters more,
feasting on looking.
On every side
the hillslope's creatures
and the serried plants
combine - benign.
Late blooming belladonna,
flowering eucalypts,
invisible cicadas
and wandering crickets.
Those light clouds refine
the way the sunshine
kindly aligns
the northern panorama
for my perambulating
panning sequence.
It's all in the can.
The thing itself,
happiness, meantime,
has shyly mutinied
against scrutiny
and passed away.
