"The best way to find out about poetry is to read the poems."
(though I have also seen it written, on the back of a Zukofsky Selected or Collected, "read the poem." - which I found intriguingly enigmatic.)
It's from "A Statement For Poetry", a 1950 essay. You can maybe read the whole essay on Google Books, under the title "Prepositions: the collected critical writings of Louis Zukofsky", pages 19-23.

Can someone steer me toward a Louis Zukovsky quote similar to, 'The
true study of poetry is the poem itself' ?? I'm trying to quote it in
a piece for an anthology and I can't find it anywhere.
Please ... I will be so grateful.
