There's all the waiting, standing. Not just him!
Everyone in there was full-on on their feet;
or at least attentive to what we'd do.
As was he! the while affecting otherwise.
We had procedures to be well-followed.
No one in the room knew why; we just did it;
but, in between, we mocked: our discipline
spent when we saw him quailing at the door.
Now he stared on a near muddled distance,
noting his final stages of their coup;
contemptuous of them; and terrified.
His breath looked shallow, his heart'd beat fast,
irregular. Yet he cursed all who jeered.
The last phase took minutes. Then we hanged him.
