Next door’s garden is dry earth.
Their ground is almost levelled.
You can see where it’s been dug,
weak flowers growing wide apart
which they water every night
because there is no shade there.
Walking just raises the dust.
They try not to cause damage
and stare from their windows
down to the end-wire and trees,
with lights on throughout each night,
at the noisy engines one hears.
They are proud of their planting
