medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
This is dated from last August and I don't know whether it was sold as was suggested. The story, including the historical howlers, appeared in much the same form in the Yorkshire Post, so I think the 'discoverer' was the source, and he did not appear to have consulted any experts. As far as I could see, from not very good reproductions, it looked to be Byzantine/Orthodox in style, about which I have no expertise, but which would suggest that if it ever belonged to one or more Crusaders they did not create it. To my untutored eye Orthodox style does not change much over time, and so it could be much more recent, although it does seem to be in a poor state of repair, though that is not a guarantee of great age. The shape is, I would have have thought, consistent with a tabernacle door, but does not exclude other possibilities. so the only definite things that could be said on the basis of the picture, was that it was probably made in Eastern Europe or the near east, not in the recent past and for a religious context.

There are the usual journalistic blunders in this but the picture is pretty.
Any comments ?
