Hi Mia
(personally....)
I have a delete button, so email volume has to be very high before it's
a problem.
Rather than cluttering or crowding, I think list discussions encourage
more list discussions -- I'm more likely to think of the MCG list as a
place to ask a question if there's an MCG email already in my inbox.
I think list discussions encourage thoughtful responses, while twitter
encourages the echo chamber, bon mots and throwing links. I like to see
focused (and occasionally, er, passionate) discussions on the list.
Subscribing to the MCG list is also a one-stop shop for
lurking/participation -- on twitter, the networks of
personal/professional connections can take weeks to decode.
Linked Data isn't 'niche' -- though particular discussions about it may
be too technical for everyone. For myself, the MCG list discussion can
be at least useful starting point for research.

Subject: [MCG] How niche is too niche?
Dear MCG-ers,
you may have noticed flurries of discussions around topics like APIs and
Linked Data (the semantic web is so last decade) on this list, and on
various blogs and tweets.
I sometimes feel that twitter, while incredibly useful, can also be a
bit of an echo chamber, and I think it's important to have these
discussions in public rather than disappear off to private email. I've
got loads of questions I'd like to ask, and ideas I'd like to share on
the subject, but I'm also aware that there are 700-something people on
this list, and maybe 20 people actively interested in these geekier
discussions.
So my question for you all is - how niche is too niche for the MCG list?
Are you happy to skim/delete these conversations, or do you feel they
clutter up the list or drown out other potential topics?
If you'd rather email me off-list that's fine -

cheers, Mia
