Workshops - please sign up for these on the day
Workshop A: Academic Writing: the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
This workshop will attempt to define what academic writing is and to place a value on it. The workshop will raise questions such as the following: (1) What are the characteristics that make a piece of writing academic? and (2) What separates good academic writing from bad? Clint Eastwood may make a cameo appearance.
Workshop B: Write on - using the 'prescription pad' technique for creativity, communication and problem-solving.
Participants will work in small groups to discuss problems related to writing, using the 'prescription pad technique'. This versatile technique empowers teams to find creative solutions to problems. It encourages 'blue sky' thinking in a structured format by getting participants to write down their thoughts and share them with others.
Workshop C: Writing for Web 2.0
A personal view on writing for the Web, from a current practitioner. Nick Sheppard is the Repository Development Officer for Leeds Metropolitan University. He blogs, Tweets and uses Facebook on a daily basis to promote and document his work on Leeds Met's Institutional Repository.
Workshop D: "Clear, concise and comprehensible"
This workshop will introduce you to the skills need to ensure all your communications are easily understood. It will also demolish so- called "rules of grammar" and explore the use of Word to produce statistics about readability.
