Hi Sarah,
Here in UCC, the e-resources librarian (within the ITS) looks after the
management of all e-resources, from set-up and maintenance to
troubleshooting user problems and developing procedure (in consultation
with the acquisition dept). We use IP authentication and everything runs
through our proxy server that is within our IP range. We do not use
Athens or Shibboleth as we find our in-house Innovative Millennium
system is well able to authenticate remote users. It also allows us to
download local usage statistics. So far we have had no problem and
vendors are quite happy to give us IP authentication.

Subject: [LIS-E-RESOURCES] Authentication - whose baby?
Hi all,
Possibly a bit of a contentious issue for a Tuesday morning, but I
wanted to appeal to collected wisdom about ownership of authentication
to electronic resources. What I mean is who in your institution 'looks
after' authentication, from set-up and maintenance to troubleshooting
user problems and developing procedure. I appreciate that much will
depend on exactly what type of authentication is being used, but any
insights would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance!
Best wishes,
Sarah
