As I work in the same institution as Chris, my observation (in grumpy old woman mode) would be to ban students from using Facebook in the library. No idea how you'd police that but it would free up about 90% of the computers instantly!

Exactly!

When I started trying to think of fixes, I was listing aspirations very similar to these, but when I started to try to think of fixes it became more difficult.

For example,
Problem: our students have a very beautiful "award winning" library to work in but complain that they can never access one of the many hundreds of computers.
Fix: invest in a bank of cheap laptops that can be borrowed at short notice on production of id just for use in the library

Problem: some final year students point out that post grad students have dedicated study spaces, why can't they?
Fix: relatively easy and quick to implement some space for them

But, how, for example, do we get unconditional positive regard for all, it breaks my heart when I read some of the comments from students about they way they have been treated.

Oooh interesting question!

What would my 6 top fixes be? In no particular order:

* Unconditional positive regard for all (staff to staff; students to staff; staff to students; students to students etc etc!)
* High quality learning spaces appropriate for diverse and exciting learning activities
* Flexibility in assessment and learning activities with ownership from students in the process
* Speedy, high quality feedback throughout the learning process
* Openness to new ideas from people (this will resonate more with those who heard my rant about use of technology at the retention convention
yesterday!)
* Inclusive practice rather than fragmented and patchy responses to 'problems'

I'd also like to see staff smiling at students (and vice versa).

I guess the harder question is, having defined these, what are we going to do to achieve them?
