The Royal Society is celebrating its 350th anniversary in 2010. As part of
these celebrations it is linking up with other organisations, including
museums and galleries, to put together a calendar of events designed to
celebrate science and highlight its impact on our daily lives. HMS Belfast,
in association with the Institute of Physics, are currently looking for a
Science Specialist on a Fee Paid basis who is able to develop a science
based activity to take place on the ship on four consecutive Saturdays
throughout the school summer holidays - July 31st, August 7th, August 14th
and August 21st. Workshops will be held between 1100 and 1300 and 1400 and
1600 each day.
The workshops must;
• Allow our visitors to engage in practical hands-on activities which enable
them to explore scientific concepts and learn through experimentation and
questioning.
• Encourage and enable collaborative and intergenerational family learning.
• Explicitly relate back to HMS Belfast and the on board exhibition Launch!
For example by exploring such concepts as buoyancy and surface tension.
• Provide a positive and engaging scientific experience.
• Be of a drop in nature where visitors can spend as long or as little time
as they want taking part.
The Fee for the project is £187.50 (gross) per day to include 4 days
preparation time and 4 days delivering (total £1,500 gross). There is an
additional £250 available for materials.
