Dear All,
The 5th Choshu Five Symposium will be held at UCL on 20 April 2010 in
collaboration with Yamaguchi University.
Venue: Roberts Building G08/Roberts Foyer, UCL (Malet Place). See map:
http://www.ucl.ac.uk/maps/ucl-maps/map2_low_res
This symposium will bring together stakeholders, engineers and policy makers to
explore the challenges that must be faced when designing infrastructure for
the 21st century. Through a series of talks and open debates we will be asking
some key questions on the subject, such as:
- How long can we design infrastructure to be sustainable for?
- What are the technical challenges in designing sustainable infrastructure
- Can we design infrastructure from the cradle to grave?
- Who pays for sustainable infrastructure?
- What makes infrastructure sustainable?
- Is 'sustainable' good?
We have some interesting and influential speakers, from Government, industry
and academia, who will be talking about different aspects of the symposium
theme.
Confirmed speakers include: Prof David Cope (Keynote Lecturer - Director,
Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology), Prof Brian Collins (Chief
Scientific Advisor for Department for Transport and the Department for
Business, Innovation and Skills; Cranfield University), Prof. Ayaho Miyamoto
(Yamaguchi University, Japan), Naeem Hussein (Arup Fellow and Director,
Arup), Dr. Paul Greening (Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Eng., UCL). The
Event will be chaired by Prof Nick Tyler (Civil, Environmental and Geomatic
Eng., UCL).
The Symposium is part of an ongoing cooperative programme between UCL and
Yamaguchi University (Japan) to commemorate the "Choshu Five", who left
Choshu (present day Ymaguchi), breaching Japanese law by travelling to
London to study at UCL in 1863. They are renowned for later returning to
Japan to revolutionize and modernize the country.
