1. WHAT'S NEW

NEW CASE STUDY
Teaching international economics and finance during (and beyond) the global
financial crisis.
This case study uses the development of a timeline of events, announcements
and policy responses researched by students and presented in class over the
course of first semester 2009, thereby providing a summary of the global
financial crisis (GFC) of 2007 to 2009. The conclusions show that this novel
approach can extend to the appreciation of other historical perspectives in
economics:

This workshop will showcase innovative and proven approaches to supporting
and developing students' maths skills for economics. It will also provide
opportunities to discuss and share ideas, and approaches to implementation.
ELEARNING SYMPOSIUM
Bristol, Thursday 9 September 2010
This event will present a range of the latest technologies suitable for
supporting economics teaching and research. There will be plenty of hands-on
opportunities to try out technologies as well as workshop sessions including
case studies.

2. NOTICEBOARD

LEARNING AND TEACHING AWARDS
We are pleased to invite nominations from the economics community for our
annual Learning and Teaching Awards. Scheme. The Awards are open to UK-based
academics who have demonstrated excellent commitment, enthusiasm and
effectiveness in their teaching practices.
There are three main categories: Outstanding Teaching, eLearning and Student
Nominated. Every year the awards attract a wide range of entries and we are
looking forward to another successful year. Each of the categories
highlights a key area in the teaching of Economics.
The deadline for nominations is Wednesday 30th June 2010 and the winner of
each category will receive £250.

STUDENT ESSAY COMPETITION
The Economics Network's annual Student Essay Competition is now open. Anyone
studying for an Economics degree in the UK is invited to submit a 1000 word
essay, or a short video, to answer the question "How is your economics
degree preparing you for life?"
The deadline is 19 April 2010 and prizes of up to one thousand pounds are

ACADEMY SCOTLAND TRAVEL FUND
This continuing initiative, launched by Academy Scotland last academic year,
is aimed at encouraging the exchange and dissemination of good practices, at
the discipline level, throughout the UK. It is specifically aimed at
enabling staff and students in Scottish HEIs to engage with colleagues from
other parts of the UK and to support their institution’s priorities and
developments in learning and teaching.
There are no set closing dates for applications. Instead, applications from
staff and students in Scotland’s 20 HEIs are invited throughout the academic
year 2009-10. Up to 30 bursaries will be funded to a maximum value of £300

UCAS REQUEST FOR SUBJECT SPECIALISTS
UCAS are currently seeking to widen the pool of HE subject-specialists to
call upon to work with UCAS on comparability studies
Subject specialists will need to undertake a set of tasks relating to the
incoming and benchmark qualification and outline their findings to an Expert
Panel. It is anticipated that each Tariff "project" will require
approximately 3 days input (non-consecutive) – of which one day will be at
UCAS offices in Cheltenham
Subject specialists will be recruited as a representative of their employing
university/college, which must offer a suitable range of HE courses in
appropriate subjects. A flat fee of £1,000 will be paid to the employing
institution upon completion of the work
