Homi Bhabha's The Location of Culture is essentially about this. I'm doing work on this in relation to heritage-how 'theory' has originated outside of academic circles and influenced it.

Subject: Ideas from the margins
While driving somewhere the other day I heard a piece on the radio about interesting ideas, and how they often originate at the margins of society, not in the mainstream. I didn’t write down the details, but got the gist of it. I have done a bit of searching, and come up with … very little. Before I embark on a more thorough search, I wondered if anyone had knowledge of any references that deal with this issue, either in a contemporary setting or earlier. Is there archaeological evidence for this, for example in earlier periods? Maybe I am missing something obvious?
As always, any information gratefully received.
With thanks.
John
