We have Echinochloa crus-galli, Panicum miliaceum, Setaria viridis and Setaria pumila in
different quantities in an endneolithic settlement in Bosnia (Okoliste, 5200-500 BC). All
species seem to be used/collected for consumption. But no Eleusine.

Eleusine indica is not uncommon in flotation samples from Neolithic China, or from samples
in India and Thailand. In China it can be associated with Panicum and Setaria cultivation,
and it probably a weed of millets generally, and sometimes rice. Has Panicum miliaceum
arrived in Serbia by the time period you are considering? If so, this might represent an
accompanying weed. However, to Udi's point, it is essential to establish that this isn't an
intrusive blackish seed. Dr. Dorian Q Fuller, FLS FSA

Dear colleagues,
I have found 5 charred seeds of Eleusine indica in the flotation samples from a Neolithic site
ca. 4000-5000 BC, in Kolubara basin, 50 km south of Belgrade, central Serbia. They are
identical to the drawings in "Identification Guide for Near Eastern Grass Seeds"(2006:99),
published by Mark Nesbitt (see attachment).
Question:
Can you please provide me the archaeological reference of the early Eleusine indica finds
from southeast Europe, the Balkans, or the neighboring regions and the approximate
dating?
Thank you in advance for your collaboration.
Best regards,
Ksenija
