Andean Pantheons, Livelihood and Imperial Architecture: The Inca Ushnu in Context
Dr. Gabriel Ramón Joffré
When: Thursday, April 15th at 10am (tea and coffee from 9:30)
Where: Centre for Anthropology, British Museum
The ushnu is one of the most renowned types of building made by the Incas during the 15th and early 16th centuries. It was the imperial symbolic centre, axis mundi, and it can still be observed at the core area of many of the major Inca settlements along the Andes.
Dr. Ramón Joffré will give a general introduction to the ushnu and outline the main features archaeologists have used to characterise it. Using historical and ethnographic evidence, he proposes that the Incas did not necessarily impose a monolithic religious credo but instead incorporated different deities into their imperial pantheon. Archaeological evidence suggests that this polytheistic strategy was at the core of the imperial politics of the Incas, and guides new interpretations of Inca religious architecture.
Gabriel Ramón Joffré received his MA from Sao Paulo University and his PhD from UEA, and is currently working at the Ushnu project at the AOA, British Museum. He has several publications on Andean ethnoarchaeology and urban history.
