Anthropology and Performance: A Critical Conversation
In celebration of the 60th anniversary of the arrival of Victor Turner at the
University of Manchester
Keynote Speakers:
Richard Schechner, Professor in Performance Studies at the Tisch School of the
Arts, New York University
Edith Turner, Honorary Doctor of Humanities and Lecturer at the University of
Virginia
Friday 16 April 2010 at the Martin Harris Centre for Music and Drama, University
of Manchester
The one-day conference aims to instigate innovative research dialogues
between the disciplines of Social Anthropology and Drama/Performance Studies,
through the pioneering scholarship of Victor Turner (Manchester School
Anthropologist 1950- 1960). Celebrating the 60th anniversary of Turner's arrival
in Manchester and the 90th anniversary of his birth, the conference will be
introduced by his widow, anthropologist Edith Turner and his lifelong companion
and collaborator in over 30 years of field research into ritual and performance.
The event aims to transcend traditional disciplinary boundaries, generating new
research between Social Anthropology and Drama within the University of
Manchester as well as creating productive links with external research groups.
Professor Richard Schechner, founder of Performance Studies, will present the
continued relevance of Turner's work across these disciplines, and the
conference panels are organised to develop new research synergies and
creative approaches to practice-based and interdisciplinary research projects.
The conference will launch and serve as a an intellectual input for a new
practice-based PhD programme in Anthropology, Media and Performance (AMP),
that will be jointly managed by the departments of Drama and Social
Anthropology at the University of Manchester.
The conference is organised by the Centre for Applied Theatre Research,
Centre for Screen Studies and Granada Centre for Visual Anthropology, and
funded by SoSS, GCVA, Drama, and CIDRA at the University of Manchester.
The conference registration is now open
Attendance fee: £15
