Hi Trevor,
Responses to your message so far have hopefully given you an idea of the
differences between Atlas and NVivo. As Ann says, I am biased in favour
of NVivo, for obvious reasons, as I do work for QSR International, the
developers of NVivo. I have though tried to keep my response as
objective as possible, but it's quite difficult when I'm so committed to
NVivo! So while my points here may be a start, you might also wish to
visit both the QSR website (www.qsrinternational.com ) and the Atlas.ti
website for further information.
The current version of NVivo is NVivo 8, although we've recently
announced that our next generation software, NVivo 9 will be available
in October 2010. Now is a great time to purchase NVivo 8, as users only
pay a small fee to upgrade to new releases.
We would argue that the advantages of NVivo 8 over Atlas.ti 6 are that
NVivo 8 has:
1) A user interface that is styled according to Microsoft Office
2007 guidelines - which means it's familiar and easy to use. Atlas.ti
uses an older style interface
2) The richest video analysis capabilities
3) More ways to visualize your data, including models, charts and
tag clouds
4) While you can work with data in virtually any language in NVivo
8, the software user interface and associated user resources are
available in six languages. Atlas.ti is currently available in one
language.
5) The ability to import projects from Atlas.ti and MAXQDA
6) Undergone major releases every 2.5 years. Atlas.ti has a five
year gap between major releases.
In addition to this, our NVivo 9 software will be:
7) The first QDA application that will allow several people to work
in one project at the same time. It's the first server solution, which
also means that if you're working with lots of data, such as videos, you
can now store your project on a server. So the data you can work with is
virtually unlimited.
8) The first to allow users to work with databases and spreadsheets
(including online survey results for example)
9) Extending the features allowing you to classify and analyse
content
10) Extending the features that allow you to visualize your data
I hope you find this useful.
Warm regards, Fiona

You'll have been asked this a few times I guess, but which is better
Atlas.ti or NVivo? I met NVivo at the start of QualRes career and really
liked it but departmental factors meant I got immersed in Atlas. I am
about
to start a new project after a break and was wondering about trying
NVivo
again. We want to analyse text but will also have a lot of audio and
video
data.
