DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION
Sandia/California’s Combustion Chemistry Department is part of the
Combustion Research Facility at Sandia National Laboratories. Under the
principal sponsorship of the Department of Energy’s Office of Basic Energy
Sciences, the department seeks to reveal the key chemical processes that
underlie the complex mechanisms of combustion. Department emphases include
determining the rates and mechanisms of chemical reactions, characterizing
molecular structure and energetics, and measuring and modeling idealized
combustion devices. Researchers in the department employ laser-based
pump/probe techniques to interrogate chemical reactivity and structure, ion
imaging to simultaneously measure velocity and internal-state distributions
of reaction products, and experiments in the femtosecond domain to directly
probe energy conversion within a molecule. In other work, molecular
photolysis is coupled with absorption/fluorescence detection methods to
determine the thermal rate coefficients and product distributions for
reactions that constitute the individual steps in the combustion chain
process. Current computational efforts include ab initio calculations of
molecular structure and energetics and computer modeling of the complete
kinetics of combustion processes in both laminar and turbulent environments.
JOB DESCRIPTION
The Combustion Chemistry Department seeks a theoretical chemist for a
full-time scientific staff position. The successful candidate will be part
of a team of experimental and theoretical scientists investigating
fundamental chemistry relevant to high-pressure combustion. Of particular
interest is the development and validation of first-principles theoretical
calculations (e.g., quantum chemistry, transition-state theory, and
master-equation calculations) for generating detailed reaction mechanisms of
the chemistry of extreme environments and for making quantitative
predictions of elementary rate coefficients. As a principal investigator in
the Combustion Research Facility, the successful candidate will be expected
to develop and maintain an international scientific reputation in physical
chemistry and combustion science and to form strong, collaborative
relationships with scientists inside and outside the facility, including
both experimentalists and other theoreticians.
QUALIFICATIONS
This position requires a PhD in chemistry, physics, or a related field.
Additional required qualifications include (1) experience with theoretical
chemical kinetics (e.g., including statistical, classical trajectory, and ab
initio electronic-structure methods); (2) a strong background of scientific
excellence in relevant areas of theoretical chemistry, as embodied in
publications and scientific presentations; and (3) a demonstrated ability to
communicate scientific results effectively.
Desired qualifications include (1) experience with gas-phase molecular
dynamics and the utilization of high-performance massively parallel
computing, (2) familiarity with high-pressure chemical-kinetics experiments,
(3) knowledge of combustion chemistry, and (4) relevant postdoctoral
experience.
Candidate must be able to obtain a U.S. Department of Energy security
clearance for this position. To obtain a security clearance, U.S.
citizenship is required.
