Architectural Association Archive
Friday 12th February 2010
The AA is a school that produces its share of great architects, designers or
educators of immense stature, importance; even talent.
The Architectural Association Archives consist of 500 cubic feet of documents
and in excess of 2000 architectural drawings, paintings and works on paper. It
documents the administrative and educational history of the AA and acts to
preserve examples of the Association's material culture and graphic output.
The process of gathering together and listing all surviving material was started
in 2007 and a long-term cataloguing project is underway to make accessible
the Archives' complete holdings and ongoing accessions.
Also the archive is hosting an exhibition within the school from the 8th -19th
February called AA Archives Revealed: Highlights from the Collections
Running the gamut from 19th-century student esquisses to international
competition entries from the 1980s, this exhibition showcases some of the
highlights from the AA’s newly established archives. Outstanding student work,
from graduation projects to pantomime scenery, is presented alongside major
historical gifts received by the AA. These include designs for the 1951 Festival
of Britain and a recently conserved 1.5metre-long elevation of the Houses of
Parliament by Sir Charles Barry
