Just tried it on our test leopard box and it works for me except there are many unaligned pointer warnings on the shell (the 32-bit one is fine). The first time I ran gaia it did take a minute to run up but I'm confused as to why you see a difference.

$ export BASE_DIR=$STARLINK_DIR
$ cd $BASE_DIR
$ gdb $GAIA_DIR/gaia_wish
(gdb) run $BASE_DIR/lib/gaia4.4.1/gaiaMain.tcl
and see what happens.
