Hi Kevin
Thanks very much for responding. I did see your tweet too, thank you. I
wasn't aware of the NARA document, so thanks indeed for telling me about
it. I've seen Ross's briefing paper and have followed up those
references. I've also been reading Ross's DCC Manual chapter and,
although I happen to think that there are some problems with his
conceptualisations, it is a good starting point.
The other article, and the Craig and Laurialt paper, I also hadn't come
across, so thanks for those references too.
On another matter, I must thank you for that glowing recommendation you
wrote for me on LinkedIn. I'm not sure anything ever comes of LinkedIn
but its good to have such nice recommendations, just in case.
Hope things are going well for you and yours.
Regards
Andrew

You may well already be aware of these, but others may not.
Appendix 2 of NARA's policy deals specifically with observational data
in the physical sciences, and later with research data in general.
http://www.archives.gov/records-mgmt/initiatives/appraisal.html
And there's an article in archivaria whose title looks promising,
although I confess I haven't read it:
"Today's data are part of tomorrow's research: archival issues in the
sciences."
Barbara Craig, Tracey P. Lauriault, D.R. Fraser Taylor, and Peter L.
Pulsifer), Archivaria 64 (Spring 2008).
Craig & Lauriault also gave a paper in 2006 about geospatial data, but I
don't think it touched on appraisal.
There's also a DCC briefing paper by Ross Harvey on appraisal and
selection which contains references to a number of other relevant
papers:
http://www.dcc.ac.uk/resource/briefing-papers/appraisal-and-selection/
The DCC briefing paper is probably a good starting point for anyone
reading this (not you, Andrew!) who isn't familiar with the basic
concepts, although the NARA policy is also accessible to the general
reader.
best regards
Kevin
