Whatever period (ours is essentially 25 years from retirement), calculating from DOB makes no sense when the issue is working with children.
75 years from DOB would be just 10 years for someone retiring at 65, and this is shorter than the potential limitation period for claims by children.

We operate a retention of termination plus 7 years for staff who do not work with children or vulnerable adults. For those staff who do work with children / vulnerable adults, we have a DOB plus 75 years retention period.
This decision was reached through consulation with HR, experts in Childrens / Adults, employee admin managers etc...so it was fully documented as to why we decided on those retention periods. I think that's the main thing Craig - decide on a period but document the fact.

We're currently putting together a retention schedule for our HR departmental records and are in negotiations with HR over records relating to staff working with children, vulnerable adults and also teaching staff. Many of the current retention periods HR staff are telling us (including 70 years for files relating to teaching staff) seem to have been developed years ago by HR/Social care staff who have long since left the organisation without documenting their reasoning.
We'd be very grateful to anyone who would be willing to share, on or off list, their retention periods for those types of records.
