Dear Jane,
I can understand if you need to be seen to condemn the language,
especially if silence is seen as passive condoning; but it was not a
public forum, just a private written exchange between two people.
Have you considered the person knows of your work in relation to ethnic
minorities and possibly is mischievously wanting to get a rise out of
you, i.e. wind you up?
On this occasion, faced with your situation, I would ignore the written
response, but would be minded to see if the person talks/ behaves like
this in future.

and certainly no more presents! Unless of course you can find a 'day
trip and course on (ethnic group) culture' ???
I do feel that you would be quite justified in tackling rather more
robustly the said unworthy recipient , who by their language is not an
aged grandma who might deserve slightly more careful handling, 'they
cannot help it poor dears, its their upbringing in that generation'....
Now, who was ignorant, and of what? I have almost completely stopped
exchanging conversation with my most extreme relative, but he does now
recognse that we disagree on the vexed question of migration (In, - he
sees no problems in his brothers settling abroad, as far as I know!)

I'd send him/her Matalan vouchers in future; they don't deserve M&S.

Dear listmembers
can I have your suggestions on how to respond to this (not very close)
relation to whom I gave a Marks and Spencer gift voucher for Christmas?
Their thank-you card included the following (with the name of the ethnic
group omitted):
I took it [the voucher] with me a couple of days after Christmas but
couldn't get near anything for all the [ethnic group] pushing everyone
around to grab arms full of clothes and shoes. God do they get on my
wick, so ignorant. I then went in the food department - not a soul
around and no [ethnic group], but I didn't want to spend my voucher on
food.
While I have few problems dealing with this sort of comment when writing
a report about, for instance, racism and lack of cultural competence in
health services, I am finding it difficult to work out how to deal with
this instance.
Your suggestions would be much appreciated.
Jane
