Hi
You're not alone. When one of my users say their Athens login isn't working, the first thing I ask is "did the place you logged in say it was an Athens Authentication Point". They're almost always logging in at the wrong place. I started sending an e-mail explaining how to login on each publisher's website when I create an Athens account because of this. It helps, but hasn't eliminated the problem. I did wonder if it was just us who had this problem because some of our users aren't familiar with e-journals, but it catches the techie-er ones as well. It's annoying because it is purely a web design problem and would be easy for publishers to fix with only a few tweaks, maybe just a change of wording. A standardized phrase or logo would be nice, but I'll happily settle for a bit of clarity instead (eg. clearly labeled links to the Athens login area and the publisher login area so they can't be mixed up).
Has anyone actually complained directly to the publishers about this? I confess I haven't, but I will. It's possible that they don't realize that this is a problem.
Eileen

Subject: Re: [LIS-E-RESOURCES] Sign in via Athens Username/Password appears on journal home pages even though IP-authenticated
Hi
Users have problems with the login procedure for many various reasons which are mainly caused by the variety of designs of publishers' and service providers' websites.
One particular problem is when they have been IP-authenticated and hence given seamless access to all the journals that we subscribe to for the years that we are entitled to access, BUT they try to access a journal or year of a journal that we are not entitled to access (or that we are entitled to access but is not available to us in error) and up comes a page telling them (if they're lucky) that this is only available to (various wordings...) people who sign in and ......you get my drift.
As an aside, we don't use Athens any longer, but use Shibboleth which has various names on different sites. The worst is Wiley which is not shibbolised but has an 'Institutional login' which is a term used often for shibboleth but in this case is a Wiley-specific login.......
Thanks
Sandra

Subject: [LIS-E-RESOURCES] Sign in via Athens Username/Password appears on journal home pages even though IP-authenticated
Hi,
Is anyone else out there irritated by the misleading "Sign in via Athens
Username/Password", or similar, link that appears on the home pages of
IP-authenticated resources, when further authentication is not required?
If so, has anyone been able to get the link removed by the vendor?
Thank you.
