The West Yorkshire Archaeology Advisory Service is seeking a Senior
Archaeological Officer to work at their Wakefield office. The successful
applicant will be expected to:
monitor planning applications and analogous submissions and proposals to
determine their historic environment implications, with particular reference to
historic buildings;
negotiate with owners, developers and their agents, archaeological
contractors and consultants and other interested parties;
advise on historic building management and conservation issues to interested
parties
carry out site appraisals and prepare detailed specifications for building
recording as required;
monitor (both on site and through detailed checking of submitted reports) the
work of archaeological contractors and to assist in the maintenance and
enhancement of, and the provision of access to, the West Yorkshire Historic
Environment Record (HER).
They will also be expected to promote the work of the service and the HER.
Applicants will need at least 2 years experience working in a similar
environment, ideally carrying out similar duties, have good communication and
organisational skills, a flexible approach in dealing with a potentially heavy
workload, be able to establish clear priorities and be a team player. You
should be qualified to degree level in a relevant subject and have a good
knowledge of the archaeology of buildings, the relevant legislation and planning
system in England. You will also be computer literate, with experience of
working with a GIS application, preferably MapInfo. An interest in industrial
archaeology would be advantageous.
West Yorkshire has one of the highest concentrations of listed buildings
outside London. It also has a varied industrial heritage, some of which is of
international importance.
