Hello all
At the end of last month, Melanie Cooke and I attended and made a presentation at the Journeys and Justice conference, hosted by the Geography department here at Leeds in conjunction with Amnesty International, LASSN (Leeds Asylum Seekers Support Network) and Leeds Met University. Our presentation was about the importance of ESOL classes for refugees. A number of presentations from the event - including ours - have now been posted on the conference website:
http://www.geog.leeds.ac.uk/research/conferences/journeys-and-justice/journeys-and-justice-presentations.html .
This was a hugely worthwhile event, bringing together researchers and activists working in many areas relating to forced migration.
Among the highlights for me was Hannah Lewis' keynote speech. Hannah is the author of the 2007 report on destitution among asylum seekers in Leeds:
Lewis, H. (2007) Destitution in Leeds: the Experiences of People Seeking Asylum and Supporting Agencies. York: Joseph Rowntree Charitable Trust.
This report, and the outcomes of associated work, can be found at

Also, a description by Leanne MacMillan and Sonya Sceats of their work with the Medical Foundation for the Care of Victims of Torture stood out. You can find out about this valuable organisation here:

Best wishes
