About BDI: BRAC Development Institute (BDI) seeks to promote research
and build knowledge on practical solutions to problems of the poor in
the global South. More specifically, BDI serves as a resource centre
for issues surrounding poverty and the poor. BDI’s research
programmes include Economic Transformation, Democratic Governance,
and Women’s Empowerment. BDI is housed at BRAC University in Dhaka,
Bangladesh, with a satellite research unit in London, UK.
About the Graduation Program: The Graduation Program, funded by CGAP/
The Ford Foundation, is a global effort to understand how safety
nets, livelihoods and microfinance can be sequenced to create
pathways for the poorest out of extreme poverty. The Graduation
Program is helping to implement nine Graduation Pilots in seven
countries, in partnership with local organizations. BDI is committed
to advising these organisations, as well as researching and
evaluating the on-ground implementations.
About the Position: The Research Associate will be responsible for
the Graduation research programmes in Ethiopia and Yemen, which aims to:
Use life histories of programme beneficiaries to develop a cross-
country analysis of extreme poverty
Understand how women’s past experiences of poverty have shaped
their experience of the graduation program
Evaluate the effectiveness of the Graduation Program through
women's ongoing stories
Reporting lines: The postholder will report to the Senior Research
Associate, based in London.
Key Responsibilities:
Recruit, train and supervise a field researcher in Ethiopia and
Yemen to carry out life histories with program beneficiaries
Code and analyse the extensive qualitative data generated by the
project
Write up interim and final research reports, based on analysis of
data produced by the project
Proactively identify and generate opportunities to publish and
disseminate research findings with policymakers, research
institutions, and the media
Collaborate with partner organisations to feedback lessons learnt
in order to improve program implementations
Travel to Ethiopia and Yemen as deemed appropriate) and attend
global meeting workshops/conferences
Take on various tasks as decided by the Senior Research Associate
Skills and Competencies:
A masters degree in International Development, Gender Studies,
Anthropology, Sociology, or other relevant fields
Skilled qualitative researcher, with highly developed interviewing
and facilitation skills and experience in analysing qualitative data
Excellent oral and written communication skills, with demonstrable
experience of producing high quality written reports and academic
outputs
Proven team leadership skills, with the ability to motivate,
empower and supervise others, particularly field researchers who may
have little research experience
Proven ability to take initiatives, plan and prioritise workload
and to work independently as required
Ability to travel globally 15-20% of the time and work flexibly
