ANNOUNCEMENT TWO VACANCIES
Vacancy 1:
PhD-researcher Applied Mathematics (1.0 fte)
Eindhoven University of Technology
Job description
The candidate is expected to perform research using mathematical models and techniques on the design and performance evaluation of distributed spectrum sharing algorithms for emerging large-scale wireless meshes and cognitive-radio networks. In contrast to today's cellular architectures, these networks typically lack any centralized control entity for allocating resources and explicitly coordinating transmissions. Instead, these networks vitally depend on the individual nodes to operate autonomously and efficiently share the medium in a distributed fashion. This requires nodes to schedule their individual transmissions and decide on the use of shared resources based on knowledge that is locally available or only involves limited exchange of information. The resulting mathematical models give rise to high-dimensional stochastic processes with infinite state spaces, which do not admit exact distributional results or yield to standard numerical techniques or brute-force simulation. In order to confront that challenge, we will launch various lines of attack, and in particular leverage asymptotic scaling methods.
The project is funded by a Microsoft PhD scholarship. The PhD scholarship program recognizes and supports exceptional students who show the potential to make an outstanding contribution to science and computing. There are opportunities for an internship at Microsoft Research in Cambridge.
Requirements
University graduate (Master level) in mathematics. A background in statistical physics, electrical engineering or computer science might be suitable as well. The ideal candidate has an exceptional mathematical talent, and knowledge of probability theory, stochastic processes, and programming.
Appointment and salary
o An appointment for four years
o Gross monthly salaries in accordance with the Collective Labor Agreement of the Dutch Universities (CAO NU), increasing from € 2042 per month initially, to € 2612 in the fourth year.
o An attractive package of fringe benefits (including excellent work facilities, end of the year allowance and sport facilities)
Information and application
More information can be obtained from Prof.dr.ir. Sem Borst ([log in to unmask]) and dr. Johan van Leeuwaarden ([log in to unmask]). Candidates are invited to send their application together with curriculum vitae, motivation letter, marks transcripts, and the names and email addresses of two references to [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>
Vacancy 2:
PhD-researcher Mathematics (1.0 fte)
Eindhoven University of Technology
Job description
The candidate is expected to perform research at the interface of probability and stochastic processes on the one hand, and analytic and enumerative combinatorics on the other hand. More specifically, the project aims at investigating two-dimensional walks in the quarter plane. The project is funded by NWO (the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research).
Requirements
University graduate (Master level) in mathematics. The applicant is expected to have a solid background in at least one of both sides of the project. The ideal candidate has an exceptional mathematical talent, creative ability and knowledge of probability theory, stochastic processes, and complex analysis.
Appointment and salary
