MSc in Statistical Epidemiology
University of Leeds, UK

This established MSc course in Statistical Epidemiology aims to give scientists, mathematicians and clinicians the statistical skills they require to engage in all areas of health research, epidemiology and biostatistics. In addition to excellent skills in medical statistics, the course also aims to encourage an enquiring attitude and a broader understanding of the research environment. Graduates will go on to work in the NHS, the pharmaceutical industry, University medical schools and research institutes, where they will directly contribute to work that will benefit people's health and quality of life.

Leeds is among the top ten universities for research in the UK, and is internationally acknowledged as a centre of excellence. Integrating research and learning is at the heart of our strategy: our courses are taught by staff engaged in world-class research and cutting-edge professional practice. Students will be part of the Centre for Epidemiology & Biostatistics and encouraged to take part in the Centre's seminar series.

The Centre for Epidemiology & Biostatistics carries out internationally important translational research into complex chronic disorders including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and cancer. As a student in the Centre, you will learn from academics and researchers at the cutting edge of international research, using the latest methods and technology to deliver inspirational learning and teaching. In 2009 we hosted the Annual Meeting for Teachers of Medical Statistics.

The programme comprises a combination of taught components, transferable and professional skills training and research components:

Core epidemiology
Statistical Inference
Introduction to modelling
Advanced epidemiology
Advanced modelling
Multi-level and latent variable analysis
Professional spine covering a range of research skills and competencies including critical appraisal, ethics, reviewing and writing research articles.

Optional modules include:

Genetic epidemiology
Health Services Research
Molecular epidemiology
Clinical trials

The course culminates in a research project, chosen, designed, conducted and written up in collaboration with one of the Centre's research teams. You will be encouraged to submit the results of the project for publication in a journal.

Example projects include:

Investigation of the possible causes of dyspeptic and reflux symptoms in a population of adults.
Investigation of the association between type 1 diabetes and autism.
Development of approaches to selection bias in case-control studies.

Leeds is centrally located, with good access by rail and road to the rest of the UK, and close to the beautiful Yorkshire Dales, Lake District and Peak District.

Further details and how to apply are available at: www.tinyurl.com/statsepi

Potential applicants are also encouraged to discuss the course informally with the Programme Manager, Dr Graham Law (Email: [log in to unmask]) (Phone: +44 (0) 113 343 7565).
