I think Francis does highlight something that appears problematic and in
general is problematic across the field. A nebulous definition of magic
is always going to cast a cloud over the conclusions reached.
However, Dave is right, it's not a review. One sees too much of this
sort of thing masquerading as such. It is worrying that Mogg sees this
as an increasing trend.
We should consider that we are all colleagues here and the tone of the
piece is entirely unacceptable in that context. Being new to the list I
had hoped for something better.
Andrew put it all so very well in his reply, so I shall end here rather
than risk repetition. I simply thought it important to add another voice
of censure and support for Susan's continued work in this difficult
field. I would like to think that Francis didn't intend his piece to be
so abusive - it is easy to get carried away - and hopefully we will see
a more considered argument from him in the future. I only hope Susan
hasn't already undertaken any subjective anthropological experiments in
cursing.
All the best,
Leo
