Hello everyone
Design-wise this looks to be a conflation of shapes and motifs originally with different cultural origins - it's a bit of a hybrid.
It could be something made in China or Japan for export or it could be something made in Europe imitating and elaborating on 'oriental' design.
Museum Ethnographers Group would be able to advise on likely origin.
Best
George

Lisa,
My Applied Art colleagues also agree with the idea of an incense burner but were unsure if it was bronze as the colour did not seem right (this may be the photo however). I find the info sheets for the objects lessons boxes really helpful to think through identifying metals etc:

Dear All,
One of our volunteers has recently inherited the attached object and would like to know what it might be.
It is 230mm high, 120mm maximum diameter, 95mm base diameter and weighs 1.167 kgs.
We believe it might be made of bronze due to its weight and colour.
The top part with the decorative holes can be lifted off to access the chamber inside, although we believe that some decorative feature is missing from the top of the lid.
Does anyone have any ideas?
Could it be a funeral urn?
Many thanks,
Lisa
