Description
SciDev.Net is looking for a deputy news editor to join its busy news team
covering the role of science and technology in meeting the needs of
developing countries.
The work involves a range of editorial tasks including writing news stories and
summaries, commissioning, editing and sub-editing articles from journalists
around the world, searching for pictures to accompany news articles, and
scanning press releases and other news media for potential news.
The position, which is based in central London, would suit a recently-qualified
graduate with some experience of science journalism or science communication.
Tasks
• Commissioning, editing, sub-editing & proofing articles from freelance
contributors around the developing world
• Scanning press releases and other news media for potential news
stories
• Writing summaries of articles appearing elsewhere, including papers in
scientific journals
• Researching and writing news stories
• Maintaining a news diary of future events
• Picture research
• Assisting the news editor as required, and standing in for the news
editor when he or she is away
• Assisting other members of staff as required
Job requirements
• Good basic knowledge of news reporting, editing and sub-editing
• Ability to write concisely and accurately under pressure
• Good basic scientific or technological knowledge (a degree in science
or technology is desirable but not essential)
• Keen interest in the applications of science and technology to the
needs of developing countries
• Good organisational skills
• Some knowledge of Spanish, French, or Chinese is desirable but not
essential
• The candidate must be able to work legally in the United Kingdom
Salary
£23,304 – 25,225 depending on experience
