Hi All
Just a quick response to Bridget's post (thanks), as one of the organisers
of the workshop.
The ethos for the workshop is one of inclusivity- the makeup of the group
will be majority digital media students working with Culture Lab and ICCHS
at the university, and by no means just people with a computer science
background. It's right that we ask for a baseline of skill for attendance-
there are other courses for beginners and non-programmers (such as a
workshop day Friday 29th January at the V&A using the same framework we
intend to use). We identified a lack of mid-range or intermediate workshops,
which could deliver some excellent results for those at the appropriate
stage in their own learning. It recognises the many skills of the
self-taught programmer within the mix, I hope.
We're not intending to create 'learning products' - these may arise- we're
more interested in the foundations of good interface design and efficiency
and wider value. I think it therefore reflects more of informal learning
than curricular approaches. On full interpretation, that's not our aim
either- this is about upskilling and collaboration in a community of
practice, we could not hope to address the multiplicity of various
collections, needs and wishes within 2 and a half days. But we can give
support, skills and a community to be part of to help, when people return to
their respective professional contexts.
But mostly, it's about coming and having a great time, creating foundations
of lasting value! Looking forward to meeting some of you over the three days!
Will
