Sharon,
We catalogue individual electronic resources as requested.
We do not routinely catalogue all the separate titles on the large
subscription packages.
Over the years we have tried to identify the most useful and relevant
titles and then catalogue and link those. However, the problem was
always which link to use when there was more than one platform
available. Now we have SFX and we can link the titles currently on the
catalogue to SFX and the users can decide which platform to choose
depending on the holdings offered.
We are currently updating our original individual journal links to SFX
links. We are doing this manually. We work through lists of titles where
the links are broken and/or the subscription packages have changed.
Not everything that is on SFX is on the library catalogue. The policy is
that if we have paper holdings and the title is also available
electronically, we should try to add the link to SFX. However, we rely
on the subject librarians informing us of other titles that they wish us
to link.
The students are informed during Induction that they can access
electronic resources from the A-Z list on SFX if they know the title of
the journal. If they are searching or browsing using keywords on the
library catalogue they will also find links to e-journal titles that
they may not have been aware of.
We have no plans to abandon linking journal records to SFX or adding and
amending the links as necessary, but we cannot hope to have everything
that is available on SFX also on the library catalogue. User education
is the key to accessibility.

Subject: [LIS-E-RESOURCES] Ejournal cataloguing
We are looking at our ejournal cataloguing policy. We currently manually
catalogue both individual ejournal subscriptions and ejournals which
come as a
part of large packages, but are finding this difficult to sustain. It
would be
useful to hear of other libraries' experiences. I am happy to summarise
for the
list.
1. Does your institution manually catalogue both its individual ejournal
subscriptions and ejournals which come as a part of large packages?
2. Do you use MARCit or a similar product?
3. Have there been any downsides from using MARCit, for example, in
terms of
reduced searchability of your catalogue?
4. If you answered yes to either of questions 1 or 2, what is your
rationale for
continuing to include ejournals in your library catalogue, rather than
rely on
the A-Z list of a product such as SFX?
5. Has anyone decided to abandon the cataloguing of ejournals (with
perhaps
the exception of individual subscriptions) in favour of the A-Z list in
SFX (or
similar product)?
Many thanks,
Sharon
